Sirin Labs, the Israeli-based tech startup has officially launched it’s high-end Android smartphone ‘Solarin’. Priced at US$ 14,000 or GBP 9,500, the gadget is dubbed as the ‘Rolls Royce of smartphones. This super costly gadget comes with anti-cyberattack software from Zimperium; and KoolSpan chip-to-chip 256-bit AES encryption similar to what the military uses to protect communications.
Solarin is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, a 5.5 inch IPS LED 2K resolution screen and a rear camera with 23.8MP. The device is available for sale at Sirin’s first retail store in Mayfair (34 Bruton Place), London from June 1 and at Harrods, Knightsbridge from June 30. With R&D operations in Tel Aviv and Lund, Sweden the company had raised $72 million in a “seed” round from Moshe Hogeg, Kazakh businessman Kenges Rakishev, and the Chinese social networking service Renren to fund the operations.
According to Media reports, Sirin was started with an aim to “create the most advanced mobile device that combined the highest privacy settings, operated faster than any other phone, built with the best materials from around the world.”
“Cyberattacks are endemic across the globe. This trend is on the increase. Solarin is pioneering new, uncompromising privacy measures to provide customers with greater confidence and the reassurance necessary to handle business-critical information,” Tal Cohen, CEO and co-founder of Sirin Labs, was quoted. Tech Crunch earlier reported that the smartphone will only be sold to people who are identified with their passports, and there is a list of countries that the phone won’t be sold to.

And wait, this is not the costliest phone ever! In 2006, Nokia through its then subsidiary company Vertu launched a $310,000 “Signature Cobra” device in 2006 and “Constellation” smartphone priced in 2011. In 2012, Nokia sold the luxury phone brand maker Vertu to a Chinese company Godin Holdings. Later Vertu brought “Vertu Ti”, its first Android device to market, that is priced at Rs. 6,49,990 in India. Vertu Ti is powered by dual-core 1.7GHz processor along with 1GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
